Application of a technology-based instructional resource in diabetes education at multiple schools of pharmacy: evaluation of student learning and satisfaction

Abstract 

Objective

To evaluate student knowledge of diabetes management and satisfaction with the course content and web-based design of DM Educate, a comprehensive diabetes course, at multiple schools of pharmacy.

Methods

Student learning was assessed though pre- and post-course knowledge tests composed of 34 questions. Student satisfaction was assessed though a post-course questionnaire focusing on content, design, technical aspects, and influence of the course on future opportunities sought.

Results

The median number of correct responses was 17 (50%) on the pre-test and 21.5 (63%) on the post-test (p < 0.001). Student satisfaction was high with the course structure, material, and technical use. Seventy-two percent of students stated they would seek out experiential learning opportunities that incorporated diabetes education.

Conclusion

This study validates the effectiveness of DM Educate course materials at multiple schools of pharmacy. Students significantly improved their knowledge of diabetes and management of patients with diabetes after completing the course and reported increased confidence in speaking with patients about all aspects of diabetes and increased interest in seeking further diabetes resources.
